Jason Bentley: KCRW's New Music Director
Yeah, blogs are great and P2P makes everything available (or so it seems). But when you really want to discover new music, Youtube is a the ultimate discovery service. We've never not found a track on YouTube, no matter how obscure. And the Related Video suggestions will have you bouncing to more and more unknown cuts. The audio might not be the best quality, but it's a great way to waste away and afternoon.
I started with Phortune's "Can You Feel the Bass," one of my all time favorite acid tracks. It's pretty hard to find (I know it from an old DJ Hell X-Mix CD) and you'll pay at least 40 euros for a copy online. But here it is for free.
From there, I found this Phortune track I hadn't heard before. More 808 claps and evil robot vocals, "Bass! Bass! Bass!" but then it goes into a really nice synth line. Alas, the full vocal is a little too much when they get to "Thunder! Falling from the skys!" And no instrumental exist.
Feel adventurous, I scrolled down the recommends until I found this UK tracked by the group Auto Bahn. A harder ravey cut, with choppy female vocals. You can almost envision Madchester kids in baggy pants and oversized hats waving glowsticks at the Hacienda. And it's all about owning a bunch of fancy cars. Bonus.
I like this Total Recall thing - it's eclectic - kinda like URB used to be.
