Fuck label constraints and industry norms. Originality will always usurp the two. You may not get filthy rich and be able swipe credit cards through the buttcheeks of promiscuous young women, but there’s more to life than hedonistic perks and cheap thrills. This South Side Jamaica Queens MC (no, not Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson) is proof of that. His playful narratives and quizzical rhymes recall a younger Biz Markie and Slick Rick (minus the eye-patch, of course). Junclassic’s sophomore album, Overqualified, didn’t catch much mainstream buzz, but is equally deserving of praise for its atypical sound collages and raucous delivery. In an age ripe with ringtone rap and the ever-omnipresent Soulja Boy, Junclassic is okay with being Junclassic. And there’s definitely no shame in that.
