Peter Bailey

Around since the techno and acid house surge of the early 90s in New York, Peter Bailey is one artist who has seen it all, from Sound Factory to Pacha. With a solid production history under his belt (including hits "U Need It" and "Dancefloor), his recent signing to Stereo Productions and a steady touring schedule, this is one DJ showing no signs of slowing down. Considering how busy his days seem to be, we feel lucky Peter found time to pencil us in and pen these reviews...

Buff1

When überproducer James “J Dilla” Yancey passed in February of last year, the buzz of Michigan’s hip-hop scene could have easily died before it had even got started. Luckily, artists like Black Milk and Phat Kat have made waves to keep the state kicking, while upcoming projects from Mitten mainstays (Royce Da 5’9”, OneBeLo, Slum Village) and major labels look for new talent (Trick Trick and producer Nick Speed with G-Unit, and Tone Tone to Jazze Pha’s Sho’Nuff Records). Michigan has a bright future.

Buff1, however, has been there through it all. He and his veteran crew the Athletic Mic League have garnered a considerable following with their lack of preachy complaints about hip-hop and their abundance of lyrical acrobatics and robust production. Buff’s new solo debut, Pure, expounds on his crew’s reputation and shows that he’s got what it takes to handle his own. With a sincere, crystal-clear delivery and lyrical content that ranges everywhere from braggadocio punchlines to politics and his love for music, Buff has an early contender for indie album of the year, with URB’s Next 1000 and OkayPlayer taking notice. URB got Buff to sit down and review his own choice of five tracks currently heating up the airwaves and the Internet.

Telefon Tel Aviv

Veteran purveyors of the electronic beat, New Orleans duo Telefon Tel Aviv have briefly broken off from looking forward to cast an eye back. Here TTA’s Josh Eustis gives the lowdown on his current listening.

Kenneth James Gibson

KJG is a man of many faces, to list all his monikers would take more space that we have here. Indie folks will remember him as a former member of the Furry Things, but us Techno junkies best know him best as [a]pendics.shuffle and through his labels Adjunct and Orac. The long and short of it is this is one seriously talented producer/DJ. Look out for his latest release on Underl_ne, out now.

Hot Chip

Chances are you now who Hot Chip is by now. They are, after all, one of the greatest synth-pop hopes to escape from England since battery-powered bands like the Human League. What you might not realize is their status as decent DJs. Not some after-party rock star-as-DJ shit either; dudes can really throw down, as evidenced by Hot Chip's recent entry into !K7's DJ: Kicks series, which includes everything from Positive K to Black Devil Disco Club. Felix Martin and Alexis Taylor shared their crate for a second.

The new opus, Pen Caps and Colored Pencils, is suitably bedecked with obscure sounds, many of which turn out to be O'Neil's own voice. Here are his latest vinyl discoveries:
